British English vs. American English in a university settingŠabec, NadaThis article addreses the issue of the status of British vs. American Anglish in a university setting as well as students' attitudes toward the two varieties. While in the past it was selfevident to ... regard British English as an indisputable norm to be followed, this is no longer the case today. In a world of omnipresent globalization is it American English or at least an Americanized variety of English which is being increasingly used for the purpose of international communication. The responses to the questions from questionnaire administered to students of Maribor University show that the majority identifies more with American English, finds it easier to understand, more widely spoken and more practical than British English. All, however, wish to have more information about the two varieties and a more thorough approach to them. At the same time the results point to the difficulties that students experience while trying to keep the two apart in a consistent manner. They also reveal the students' rather stereotypical ideas about both British and American English and about Britons and Americans and their cultures. The author is in favor of a greater flexibility in including both varieties in EFL teaching in order to help students develop their capacities for successful and efficient communication outside the school environment to their full potentialSource: Vestnik. - ISSN 0351-3513 (Letn. 34, št. 1/2, 2000, str. 75-86)Type of material - article, component part ; adult, seriousPublish date - 2000Language - englishCOBISS.SI-ID - 10553608
