  • Colour changes of ash-wood (Fraxinus excelsior L.) during conventional drying
    Straže, Aleš ...
Discolourations emerging in ash-wood (Fraxinus excelsior L.) during conventional drying were studied. Green boards, 25mm in thickness, were dried according to 6 different schedules. The temperature ... was 20°, 35° or 50°C, and the relative air humidity was 65 or 95%, at constant 0.5m/s air velocity. Patterns of colour changes were visual determined and discoloured wood examined with light microscopy. Preservation of natural wood colour was reached at lower drying temperature. Lower drying rates, higher temperatures and critical moisture content of ash-wood between 29 and 36% are favourable conditions for development of discolouration. Globular deposits in ray- and axial-paratracheal parenchyma cells of discoloured wood gave positive reaction with used histological staining method. Discolouring process during ash-wood drying is considered as oxidative reaction.
