  • Textual analysis as a classroom activity

    The paper discusses the view that students should come to terms with the concept of language as an instrument of social interaction in order to learn to communicate successfully. Therefore, they ... should develop an understanding of how linguistic expressions can be described and explained in terms of a general pragmatic framework. It is suggested that students can gain more insight into the functional language theory. For this purpose short and simple texts which are close to students' ways grammar makes meaning by means of analysis based on categories of perceptiveness can be used. As an illustration of this kind of classroom activity, the paper presents an analysis of song lyrics from a popular British band. Students of English were asked to explain interpersonal and logical meanings by giving their interpretations of the interpersonal 'story-line' and logical relations between text warts in the song
