  • The influence of moisture content and thermal modification on wood fracture
    Argensse, Tom
Wood is a great potential material in various fields of use in terms of exploitation, properties and availability. Its mechanical characteristics linked to its low weight make it a preferred material ... in the construction field. However, its water sensitivity tends to limit its use and leads to high maintenance costs and treatments. Different methods for the thermal and hydrous modification of wood have been developed in Europe since the middle of the last century. The common objective to these modification methods is to improve dimensional stability and biological durability without adding any toxic chemicals. At the same time, other earlier experiments show that heat-treatment reduces the equilibrium moisture content and slows down the water absorption of wood. Mechanics of materials theory and the concepts of stress and strain that it introduces have been at the foundation of structural engineering for hundreds of years. Fracture mechanics is a series of models used to describe the influence of cracks and defects on material behaviour. They impact and defines the strength of a material more than any other single feature, and wood is no exception. This report regroups a bibliography and research on wood general structure and properties, Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical processes to improve wood properties and fracture mechanics to have a basic knowledge on the influence of moisture content and thermal modification on wood fracture.
