  • Sun-on-ground and iso-shadows : a parametric study of two sunlight availability methods
    Kristl, Živa
In the paper the relevance of the method for asserssing building shadows and duration of solar radiation, presently used in Slovenia, is subject to study. In early stages of design shadowing is ... usually calculated with the sun-on-ground projection of the building shadow. This method is compared to the results obtained with the iso-shadow method. The iso-shadows represent the ratio of incident solar radiation on a building or land to unobstructed solar radiation received at the same location during the chosen period of time. This method enables quantitative evaluation of energy efficiency of selected layout organisation. For the calculation of both methods the computer tool "SENCE" (SHADOWS), developed at the Faculty of Civil and Geodethic Engineering at the University of Ljubljana, was used. Various building structures were investigated. First a building with reference geometry (length 60m, width 24m, height 6m) was simulated. Then the building height was increased to 12 meters and 18 meters, respectively. Also the building orientation was varied in three steps N-S, W-E, SE-NW. The comparisonbetween the two methods was made, taking into account the site size required by different building types. The evaluation of the results was carried out and the advantages and disadvantages of both methods were discussed. The analyses showed that the existing method for calculating of sunlight duration in Slovenia is relevant in most cases. For solar housing it should be crosschecked with the iso-shadow method
