  • Delamination inspection of pierced fibre reinforced polymer composite materials
    Matjaž, Nejc ...
Composite materials have despite their high market price gained in popularity in today's manufacturing of sophisticated product which have to be light and strong in order to support loads in ... difficult environments. An example of such composite material is glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) produced with vacuum infusion process. GFRP is extensively used in naval, aeronautical and sports industry. The composite parts are manufactured in near net shape. To form a component the edges of GFRP parts in different forms and geometries have to be trimmed using cutting technologies. Apart from conventional mechanical cutting operations (sawing, milling, grinding), abrasive water jet machining (AWJ) shows a clear advantage in the flexibility of the process, machining time and absence of the conventional cutting tool. Disadvantage of using AWJ technology is delamination of the material due to penetration and diffusion of water into the cutting zone of the material. In order to determine the damaged zone a method which describes the amount of damage and water penetration is presented in this work. Method consists of applying penetrant which leaves a stain on the surface of the damaged cutting zone. In the paper optimization of AWJ process parameters for piercing specimen GFRP material is presented.
