Advanced, environmentally friendly vertical tubular water turbine

About two decades ago, company Litostroj Power designed, manufactured and commissioned the first advanced environmentally friendly vertical axial tubular water turbine worldwide known as Saxo ...turbine. Due to continuous improvements, advanced and compact structure, simplified civil construction works, reliable ecological design and versatile applicability, the turbine became very recognizable product with over 30 successfully commissioned units already. While the Saxo turbine became popular on North American and Canadian open energy production market, this is surprisingly not true for the European market, where it looks somehow like that hydro energy producers overlooked numerous advantages of the turbine in the past. This paper aims to draw attention on the Saxo turbine especially because authors see the Saxo turbine as one of the most suitable solutions for several hydropower sites foreseen in the middle Sava River. Several key design features and some of the most important Saxo turbine advantages comparing to conventional Kaplan and Tubular(Bulb and Pit) turbines are described and discussed.
