  • A person-situation debate : the case of impressions formed in response to an impression management attempt
    Pagon, Milan
The literature concerning self-presentation is reviewed and a comprehensive model of self-presentation is developed. This model encompasses motivational, cognitive, and behavioral aspects. Based on ... the model, it is concluded that the approach to self-presentation, its antecedents and consequences has generally reflected the interactionist perspective, attributing equal importance to situational variables, personality variables, and their interactions. The research to date, however, has failed to address adequately the question of impression formation in response to a self-presentation attempt from the interactionist perspective, almost exclusively emphasizing situational factors. To examine the influence of both situational and individual difference variables on the impressions of a self-presenter, objective impression management was manipulated in a laboratory setting by randomly assigning 211 undergraduate subjects to either low or high IM condition. The subjects watched a videotaped interview, completed questionnaire measures of impressions about the candidate and perceptions of IM behaviors, and provided overall rating of the candidate. Individual difference measures of Machiavellianism, Interaction Anxiousness, Interpersonal Trust, Social Distrust, and Cognitive Bias were also collected. Main effects were found for objective IM, perceived IM, and for individual difference measures. Individual differences did not moderate the relationship between IM and impressions formed, so it was concluded that IM and individual differences influenced the outcome measures independent of each other. It is concluded that both individual differences and the situation significantly influenced the impressions formed in response to an impression management attempt, with IM perceptions playing the major role. These impressions can neither be fully understood nor predicted solely based on either the situation or the individual differences. Individual differences, however, did not make the subjects either more or less susceptible to an impression attempt. Future research should verify these findings using the real face-to-face interviews, more than two levels of objective IM, and different specific IM tactics.
