Development of an efficient and durable regenerative elastocaloric device [Elektronski vir]Tušek, JakaGlobal needs for more efficient and environmentally friendly cooling have stimulated the development of alternative cooling technologies, among which so-called caloric cooling technologies have shown ... great potential in recent years. Caloric cooling is based on solid-state phase transitions between low-entropy and high-entropy phases that can be triggered by external magnetic field (magnetocaloric effect), electric field (electrocaloric effect), uniaxial stress (elastocaloric effect) or hydrostatic pressure (barocaloric effect). In this talk, I will focus on the elastocaloric effect that occurs in shape memory alloys. When a (superelastic) shape memory alloy is subjected to an external mechanical stress, an exothermic austenitic-martensitic transition occurs, which causes a latent heat release or temperature increase of the material. When the mechanical stress is removed, a reverse endothermic transition occurs, which means that the latent is absorbed by the material or the material’s temperature decreases. If this process is continuously repeated an elastocaloric thermodynamic cycle can be built around the elastocaloric effect, which can serve for cooling or heat-pumping applications. After a brief description of the elastocaloric effect and a short state-of-the-art of elastocaloric materials and devices, I will present our recent advances in designing a regenerative elastocaloric device. In the first part I will discuss the designing of a fatigue-resistant tube-based elastocaloric regenerator loaded in compression, where I will present characterization of different thermodynamic cycles, thermo-hydraulic evaluation of different tube-based regenerators, numerical modelling of their cooling characteristics, evaluation of buckling stability of elastocaloric tubes and fatigue-life analysis. In the second part, I will focus on challenges in developing a compact multi-regenerator elastocaloric device that includes force recovery mechanism, which is essential for efficient operation.Source: IMRC2022 [Elektronski vir] : XXX International Materials Research Congress, August 14-19, 2022, Cancún, México : abstracts e-book (Str. 1)Type of material - conference contributionPublish date - 2022Language - englishCOBISS.SI-ID - 132831747
