  • Workflow-based evolutionary shape synthesis and optimization [Elektronski vir]
Vučina, Damir ; Kegl, Marko ; Lozina, Željan
This paper develops a robust generic methodology for design synthesis and shape optimization of mechanical components suitable for implementation in the practicing designerćs standard work ... environment. Instead of using the sensitivity terms with respect to the design variables in the finite element (FE) formulation, it applies evolutionary optimizers in searching the shape variables space. In this paper, different programs needed during evolutionary shape optimization are embedded in a workflow which includes Matlab- and Mode frontier based optimizers, ADINA finite element analysis, and C# language control and synchronization procedures that orchestrate other applications and coordinate data- flow between the applications. The workflow sequence is implemented via calls to the operating system from within individual applications, which send remote commands to each other. Coordination and synchronization are ensured by verifying the respective output files of the slave applications including wait periods, and dismissing the unsuccessful instances of the slave applications. In order to improve the processing performance, a dedicated single client- many servers cluster is developed which supports strong parallelization in terms of many simultaneous instances of the FE simulators.
