Injection molding of wood-plastics composites [Elektronski vir]

A new composite emerged in the last decade of the past century that is compounded of natural fibres and of low price polymer such as HDPE or PP. It quickly became popular for floor decking, roof ...coverings and other extruded products. But industry avoided injection moulding of this material because of various problems with fillings, surface, shrinkage etc. In this paper these issues will be addressed and solutions for them will be presented. In the paper the description of technology of injection moulding of wood-plastics composites compounded of various types of wood flour and polymers is presented. Selection and preparing of suitable wood powder and selection of polzmers and additives is also described. Procedure of injection moulding of wood-polymer composite, the selection of parameters and instructions for the mould design are specified. Also a description of advances and weaknesses of procedure is given in addition to technical obstacles that need to be overcome. In the second part the experimental work is presented in which testspecimens were injected and the search for optimum injection parameters was performed. Various mechanical and rheological tests were performed and in addition practical industrial products were injected to observe the impact of filler on the filling of the mould cavity and on the material shrinkage. On the basis of these experiments the technological window for this material is given with addition of detailed mould design guidelines and practical instruction for injection moulding.
