The objective of this clinical trial was to study the effect of peripheral andcentral SHT3 receptor blockers on portal blood flow in portal hypertension after their oral administration and to compare ...the results with those for subjects tested with propranolol. The trial included 16 subjects, i.e. a groupof 8 treated with propranolol and another of 8 treated with ondansetron. No side effects were noticed during the study, except that one subject from the ondansetron group was excluded from further testing due to the exacerbation of the basic disease (liver disease decompensation). A ten day double-blind trial was performed on a random sample. All of the subjects were taken either from group A or borderline group B according to the Child liver disease classification in order to prevent excessive variation within the sample. SPSS for Windows, version 8.01 SPSS Inc. Chicago, IL, was used for data processing. A paired t-test was used for the comparison of parameters within each group Variance analysis (ANOVA), in which classes were determined by time, was used to test the variation of time-dependent variables. The variation of the stage of esophageal varicose veins before and at the end of the trial for each of the drugs was analysed using Pearson's chi-square test. The analysis of results for patients in the group treated with propranolol proved its effect on portal blood flow (reduction) and our results are comparable to those found in literature. The blockage of peripheral and central SHT3 receptors with ondansetron did not have any effect on portal blood flow in patients with portal hypertension when the drug was administeredorally.
