Factors controlling radiogenic neodymium isotope composition of seawater and sediments in the Mozambique Channel : master thesisJovičević Klug, PatriciaIn the Mozambique Channel no previous research was done regarding the Rare Earth Element (REE) distribution in the water column. REEs can provide information about weathering inputs, water mass ... mixing, and particle dynamics in the water column. One of the REEs that was looked in detail in this thesis is neodymium and its radiogenic isotopes (143Nd/144Nd). The dissolved Nd isotope signature in water masses and sediments traces the main inputs into the marine environment and also provides useful information on the influence of the mesoscale eddies on their distribution. The Mozambique Channel is located at the very dynamic area with strong southward currents and anticyclonic mesoscale eddies. The area receives high lithogenic inputs from the main rivers Zambezi and Limpopo. Additional information about sediment sources into the Mozambique Channel is obtained from the radiogenic Sr isotope composition of leachates of surface sediments. The results of seawater samples show nutrient-like pattern for the REE concentrations and enrichment of REEs in the surface water due to lithogenic input. A lack of fractionation between PAAS (Post Archean Australian Sedimentary Rocks) normalized values of LREEs and HREEs also confirms strong lithogenic input into the observed area. Sediment samples confirm the lithogenic input from the different river catchment areas and also trace the source of sediment into the channel. The main result is that the water mass dynamics and lithogenic input of the sediment are strongly controlled by seasonal changes and mesoscale eddies.Type of material - master's thesis ; adult, seriousPublication and manufacture - Kiel : [P.
