  • Exergoeconomic optimization of a district cooling network [Elektronski vir]
Duh Čož, Tjaša ; Kitanovski, Andrej ; Poredoš, Alojz
District cooling system presents a superior alternative to local air conditioning as it helps in reducing energy consumption and protecting the environment by reducing the carbon dioxide emissions. ... The main disadvantages of DCS are high initial investment costs and long payback period. Distribution network represents a large share of initial investment costs; therefore it has a great impact on the eligibility of construction of a district cooling system. In order to ensure the competitiveness of district cooling systems, distribution network has to be optimized. In this paper the exergoeconomic concept is applied for the evaluation of a distribution network in a district cooling system. The production of cold and its related subsystems and technologies are not considered in this study. The objective function in the analysis is defined as the exergy-based cost of the final product, in our case - cold. The exergy-based cost of cold depends on the total annual cost of a distribution network, the input exergy to the distribution network, exergy losses and exergy destruction. The aim of this study is to find the exergetic optimal pipe diameter and exergetic optimal insulation thickness as well as exergoeconomic optimal pipe diameter and exergoeconomic optimal insulation thickness. The analysis was made for different cooling capacities and for two types of pipes: pre-insulated steel pipes where insulation material is polyurethane and polyethylene pipes without any insulation.
