  • AFM as a polymer characterization method for increased efficiency of wound dressing preparation
    Maver, Uroš, 1983- ...
The focus of this work is the use of AFM as a polymer characterization method [1,2]. It attempts to simulate those conditions arising from changes in the solvent, the pH and ionic strength, and ... possibility to use AFM force spectroscopy to assess their influence on polymer behaviour in such media. Knowledge about interactions in different environments is especially important in design and preparation of modern wound dressings, which are mostly polymer ]based and are exposed to drastically ]changing environments in the wound during the healing process [3]. Such exposure can cause decrease in the materials mechanic performance and can lead to degradation or even to lowering of the healing process success. Because it is desired to work with well-defined systems, we tried to establish a model system, which would enable us to assess the applicability of the mentioned technique for determination of changes in interactions between a chosen surface and polymer molecules after exposure to different environments. We were able to design a simple test for evaluation of the possible use of force spectroscopy in the assessment of polymer behaviour upon exposure to different liquid environments. Our proposed experimental setup consists of two representative polymers, a model silicon surface and two solutions of various pHs and ionic strengths. The results proved that such an approach is very promising for future testing in order to find the correct combination of materials for wound-dressing design for specific wounds.
