Kvantitativna in kvalitativna analiza vzorcev aspiracijske biopsije s tanko igloKmet, Marko ; Legovič, MirjanaBACKGROUND. Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is one of fhe methods in preoperative tumour evaluation. It is a safe, quick, simple, painless and cheap method. The development of new diagnostic ... techniques on cellular smears requires a greater number of tumour cells. The number of cells aspirated in FNAB is, however, limited. Besides thaf the sample also oontains non-tumour cells which are of no use in diagnostics. AIM. Since a certain number of tumour cells are needed for a complete diagnosfic algorithm we were eager to know how many cells remain in the needle and syringe affer two samples for routine sfains have been made and which factors influence this number (NU). This part of FNAB sample is used in ancillary diagnostic procedures that are important for accurate evaluation oi prognostic factors of a malignancy. We also wanted to defermine the composition of a FNAB sample. Thus we tried to use immunocytochemic stains to estimate the proportion of non-tumour cells. HYPOTHESES. By counting the number of cells in the above-mentioned remainder of the FNAB sample we fried to verify the following hypotheses: 1. NU depends on the oroan on which FNAB is performed. 2. NU depends on tumour characteristics. 3. NU depends on who pertorms FNAB. METHODS. 152 FNAB samplesof tumours of the breast, thyroid and lymph nodes were included into our prospective study. We counted, by using Buerker - Tuerk's chamber, the cells, which remain in the needle and syringe after the standard smears have been made and stained. The qualitative analysis was made by using immunocytochemical methods. The rest of the data was acquired from the documentafion of Departments of Cytopathology and Pathology at the Institute of Oncology in Ljubljana. T-fest was used to defermine the statistical relation between NU and the studied factor.
