  • Post-crisis suicide prevention without therapy: a randomized controlled trial
    Motto, Jerome A. ; Bostrom, A. G.
Objective: This study tested the hypothesis that long-term contact exerts a suicide prevention influence on high-risk persons who refuse treatment. Method843 persons at risk for suicide who refused ... treatment were randomly divided into a "contact" group (contacted over a 5-year period) and a "no contact" group. All deaths during the contact period and the subsequent 10 years were identified and compared. Results: Contact subjects had a lower suicide rate in all five contact years, statistically significant (p=.04) in the first two years. After contact ceased, suicide rates in the two groups converged. Conclusions: Ongoing contact making no demands of subjects appears to exert a significant preventive influence as long as frequent contact is maintained.
