  • FES of the common peroneal nerve for hemiplegia: long-term clinical follow-up
    Rozman, Janez, 1956- ...
Results of seven-year follow-up in correction of drop-foot in the patient withimplanted system (IGC) for stimulation of the common peroneal nerve (CPN) are presented. Selective activation, mainly of ... muscles that contribute to strong dorsal flexion and moderate eversion of the foot was achieved with a monopolar half-cuff (cuff) installed on the nerve behind the lateral head of the fibula. A selective gradual recruitment of fibres innervating mostly the tibialis anterior muscle (TA) and partly the peroneus brevis muscle (PB) was achieved. The current, charge balanced, biphasic stimuli with a rectangular cathodic, and exponential decaying anodic phases, delayed for SOp,s were employed. Results demonstrate significant improvements of gait. Increased velocity was obtained by improvement of all temporal and length parameters of the left and right steps. Electrophysiological findings have not revealed any sign which could be attributed to the damage of the CPN induced by the cuff orby the stimuli.
