The health status, occupational pathology and indices of negative well-being and working ability of 457 male workers employed in the mill department with the allied Boršt refuse dump and the pit ... department (including the rest of therefuse dumps) of the Žirovski vrh uranium mine were assessed in a retrospective study, covering the period from 1 Jan. 1980 do 31 Dec. 1990 (11 years). A thorough review of the workers' preemployment and in-service preventive medical files revealed a high level of occupational risk to their health. The average annual prevalence of diseases suspected of being occupational in origin (moderate occupational hearing impairment, occupationalskin disease - eczema vulgare), occupational diseases (verified cases of silicosis, unverified cases of vibration disease, severe occupationalhearing impairment, occupational skin disease) and diseases related to occupation (mild occupational hearing impairment) was 119.6 cases per 10.000 workers, whereas the average annual prevalence of occupational diseases alone amounted to 19.6 cases per 10.000 workers. (All unverified cases of occupational pathology should be referred for expert evaluation in accordance with the valid legislation). Some of the documented occupational pathology (e.g. one case of silicosis) originated from other working environments, having been acquired in the course of the worker's previous employment. There was no mortality caused by occupational pathology during thestudy period. However, a comparison of the pre-employment and in-service medical records revealed an increase in occupational pathology as well as a deterioration of the workers' health status and working ability during employment at the mine.
