  • Subjective documentary in contemporary Slovenian cinema
    Šprah, Andrej, 1960-
The article focuses on two Slovenian documentary films that belong to the field of subjective or first-person documentary cinema. It discusses Vlado Škafar's Otroci/Letter to a Child (2008) and Jasna ... Krajinovič's Damjanova soba/Damian's Room (2008), which tackle, each in their own specific way, the relation between an individual, often traumatic experience and the possibility of its filmic documentation. The special attention that the two films pay to an individual's inner life is opposed to the aggressive popularising of the sale of privacy in mass media, especially in reality TV shows. Each filmmaker uses specific formal devices to accentuate the basic narrative flow. Vlado Škafar thus intervenes in his film, composed of reflections on life experiences by individuals from various age groups, through a commentary in the form of letter writing, whereby he establishes a dialogue with the viewer that turns an ordinary experience into a universal one. Jasna Krajinovič, on the other hand, insightfully intervenes at the level of the image, combining her (colour digital) footage with (black-and-white celluloid) images shot by the protagonist Damian, who shares with the director the scenes from his traumatic youth that led him to a juvenile detention centre
