  • Phase transformations of Al-Fe and Al-Fe-Zr rapidly solidified alloys
Bizjak, Milan, 1955- ; Kosec, Ladislav
Microstructural changes arisen during the heating of rapidly solidified (RS) Al-8 wt.% Fe and Al-8 wt.% Fe-1 wt.% Zr alloys were analysed with different characterisation methods (transmission and ... scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy). The efficiency of these microstructural investigations was improved by the support of in situ measurement of electrical resistivity in a wide range of elevanted temperature. With the electrical resistivity measurement of rapidly solidified ribbons during their heating, microstructural changes were established. These changes are manifested as two resistivity-temperature minima. The temperature of the largest changes of electrical resistivity are also the temperature of the lagrest microstructural changes. The increased rate of heating shifts the microstructural changes to higher temperatures. Kisinger`s and Ozawa`s methods were used for the determination of activation energy of the precipitation from supersaturated solid solutions. The results of electrical resistivity measurement of RS ribbons made from Al-based alloys with a high concentratio of alloying elements are in good agreement with the results obtained by differential thermal analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Our investigations show that electrical resistivity measurements are a reliable and efficient support for the selection of other characterisation methods.
