  • Congruence between average general playing efficiency of basketball teams and their rank in the round robin and elimination competition system
Dežman, Brane, 1947- ; Tkalčić, Sonja
The congruence between average general playing efficiency of basketball teams and their rank in a round robin and elimination competitive system was assessed on a sample of twelve junior selections, ... which competed at the 19th European Championship for Junior Man in Croatia. In the first part of the championship the teams competed according to a round robin system in two groups of six teams (each team played five games), in the second according to a elimination system (each of the first eight teams played three games, the last four teams two games). The variable sample included number of points scored and against. Playing efficiency in offence, defence and in general was computed with the shell of the decision-making system KISS 1.2. Pearson product-moment coefficients of correlation were also computed. The congruence between average general playing efficiency of the teams and their classification points in the round robin system was high and statistically significant. The group with teams more heterogeneous in quality showed better congruence. The congruence between average general playing efficiency of the teams and their final placement in the elimination system was much lower than in the round robin system and statistically non-significant. The structure of the same general playing efficiency of the teams at individual games can be different. Some teams achieve this through better playing efficiency in defence, some through better playing efficiency in offence and others an approximately balanced playing efficiency in both phases of the game.
