  • Children with autism spectrum disorders : what do parents think about treatment, education and social inclusion?
    Schmidt, Majda ; Schmidt, Ignac
This article presents an empirical study in which we investigated the attitude of parents who have children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) towards professional support, treatment, education and ... social inclusion of their children and their families. The sample consists of 19 families with children with ASD who voluntarily participated in our research. The representatives of the Centre for Autism and Association DAN offered help in administrating the questionnaires. The sample included 18 boys and one girl with ASD. All but two of the children participated in different outpatient therapies. All children were included in the educational process. More than half of the parents expressed satisfaction over the inclusion of their children in the groups of their peers, but at the same time they were worried about the exclusion of their children from other interesting activities. Also it was not encouraging that almost half of children with ASD didn't develop any contacts with peers in the local community. Some parents also warned that the non-governmental associations did not respect their needs and wishes for support and additional information.
