  • How to be presidential [Elektronski vir] : an analysis of Barack Obama's speech on race
    Plemenitaš, Katja
The article deals with the language of American political discourse. It presents an analysis of the speech about race that Barack Obama gave during his campaign to become the Democratic presidential ... nominee as a reaction to the statements made by his former friend and pastor, Reverend Wright. The analysis is based on the functional model of language and it attempts to explain what makes Obama's political rhetoric in this speech persuasive. The analysis shows that the main message of Obamaćs race speech is that of unification. Based on that message, the speech can be classified as a tone-setting speech and as such resembles speeches from the tradition of American presidential rhetoric, even before Obama was elected president of USA.
