Starting - points: Diabetes is a widespread chronical disease. At the moment 3-6% of population is suffering from it, but in our country and in the world as well, it has been strongly increasing. It ... is specially treated in the traffic legislation of the states. Beside chronical complications, hypoglychemy has an important influence on driving capacity. Materials and methods: In the investigation 201 occasionally chosen diabetics were included. There were investigated in December 2001 and January 2002 in the waiting-room of the diabetic out-patient clinic in Ljubljana. There were 20 questions containing personal characteristics of the investigated, the type ofdiabetes, the way of treating and the appearance of hypoglychemy. The emphasis was on driving characteristics, punishment and traffic accidents. Results: Hypoglychemy was experienced by 96,2% of patients with the diabetes type 1, by 22% of patients on peroral treatment and by 70% with the diabetes type 2, treated with insulin. In the last month 65% patients type 1 had one ormore hypoglychemy, 7 patients (8,9%) having tablets and 30% of patients type2 treated with insulin. The most active drivers are patients with the diabetes type 1 who on average drive 14590 km per year, patients type 2 about 3400 km less. Patients type 1 have the longest drives, following the patients type 2 treated with the insulin. The djfferences in the number of longer drivers carried out by the investigated in the last month or in the last year are statistically characteristic (5< 0,05). Differences in the driving activity investigated patients according to appearing of hypoglychemy do not peach the statistical characteristic The investigated drive on average 4,33 (type 2 on insulin) - 5,52 (type 1) days per week. Most of their drivers lost about half an hour. They drive predominantly in town. 3/4 of them drive to work in their own car, 35% of them drive on business. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
