  • Effects of turbulence model and grid resolution on the performance prediction of a bulb turbine [Elektronski vir]
    Jošt, Dragica ...
This study presents the results of the CFD analysis in a 3-blade bulb water turbine at model scale. The simulations were carried out using OpenFOAM (an Open Source toolbox), and the commercial CFD ... code ANSYS-CFX. With OpenFOAM only RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes) simulations were performed, while with ANSYS-CFX the calculations were performed using the more accurate SAS SST (Scale- Adaptive Simulation Shear-Stress Transport) in combination with ZLES (Zonal Large Eddy Simulation). Numerically predicted efficiency values were compared to the measurements. Transient simulations with SAS SST ZLES significantly improved the agreement between numerical and experimental results. The interdependence between turbulence models, the flow in the draft tube and the calculated efficiency values are highlighted. The effect of grid resolution on ZLES results was also investigated, using grids with increasing number of nodes and different refinement near the walls
