  • The transparency of student-oriented learning analytics and its motivation potential [Elektronski vir]

    Learning management systems store various data on student activities and interactions and enable learning analytics. These data can be displayed to users by learning analytics dashboards (LADs). The ... aim of this study is to explore whether the use of a LAD can have a motivational impact on student learning and whether it can promote regular study as well as better performance on final exams. Empirical research was conducted among 221 students at the Faculty of Public Administration, University of Ljubljana, who use Moodle as part of their blended learning. They used the LearnerScript LAD to monitor their performance in online activities. Student responses were collected by means of a survey in the form of a questionnaire about their use of the LAD and its motivational factors for study. The results show that students who are motivated by high online marks used the LAD block and would like to have it in all e-classrooms. Similarly, those who are motivated to study by a well-designed and organised eclassroom also follow the information in the LAD and would like to have it in other e-classrooms. However, the most motivating element identified was encouragement in person by their teachers. Two other important motivational factors were design and content organisation in the e-classroom. The findings imply that LADs have intrinsic and extrinsic motivational potential for higher education e-learning.
