Systematically prepared programme of primary prevention represents appropriatebackground to reduce population burden of cardiovascular diseases. It should be oriented both towards health promotion ... and diminution of risk behaviours at the level of whole population (population approach) and active identification, stratification and selective treatment of those individuals athigh risk for development of manifest disease (individual high-risk approach). In the period from 1999-2004 we started to implement comprehensive primary prevention programme in Slovenia, in which we suceeded to join numerous scientific, professional and performance forces from various medical professional societies and health care institutions, governmental structures and non-govermental organizations. Corresponding clinical practice guidelines as well as necessary legislative basis and strategies were developed, adopted and implemented. Accordingly, the national policies on healthy lifestyle are in development and also nationwide programme on primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases performed in primary health care is already fully in action. In general, this programme consisted of population screening and identification ofthose individuals at high cardiovascular risk which is followed by health education intervention and other therapeutic measures if necessary. Population epidemiological and cross-sectional studies, both those who have already finished and those still in course represent the base and future directions on development of new or supplement of existing and running programmes.
