  • Teachers' nicknames as a form of teacher-student communication : their perception and significance in school life
    Pšunder, Mateja
Nicknames, as a form of communication, serve a range of social functions among which their role in carrying meanings about human relations. Although nicknames occur often in school life, they have ... been poorly researched. In this study 238 6th-grade and 8th-grade students of primary school were surveyed to determine teachers' nicknames and the contextual information surrounding nicknames. We were especially interested in the differences between students of different ages. The research showed that most nicknames of primary school teachers were derived from given names and surnames. The basic motive for assigning nicknames is not to express dislike, contempt or revenge, but rather a funny reference to a teacher while the latter is not present. The research revealed important differences between younger and older students. The study indicated a predominance of nicknaming based on playing on the teacher's name by younger students. Nicknaming based on Physical Appearance and Behavioural Characteristics appeared more frequently with older students who also pointed more frequently at the possible offensive an aggressive nature of nicknames: they most often use nicknames to express dislike, contempt or a wish to take revenge on teachers. Younger students more often have fun by assigning nicknames. And finally, a tendency could be observed among older students who report that teachers bearing nicknames have poorer relationships with students.
