  • Vloga mehanizma prometne nezgode pri prepoznavanju poškodovancev z rupturo prsne aorte = The role of the traffic accident mechanism in identifying injured persons with thoracic aorta ruptures
    Prijon, Ticijana ; Ermenc, Branko
Blunt traumas to the thoracic aorta are often an unrecognised cause of death in traffic injuries. In automobile accidents 30% of all deaths are the result of the tearing of the aorta. Aortic rupture ... is often overlooked because it is accompanied by multiple traumas. Patients that initially survive aortic traumahave incomplete tears with haematoma and undamaged adventitia, which prevents exsanguination. Timely diagnosis, proper care and treatment of the injured are therefore important. Following trauma to the aorta, approximately 80% to 85% of injured persons die immediately. About 50% of those that initially survive die within 6 hours, and an additional 20% die with 24 hours following the trauma. Recognizing the traffic accident mechanism and the risk factors that lead to trauma to the aortic wall, prompt radiological diagnosis and treatment of the injured with beta-blockers would significantly reduce themortality due to this type of trauma. Data in published studies show that the survival rate of patients with aortic rupture can be as high as 70% if thetrauma is recognized and treated immediately. The study will present the causal connection between trauma to the aortic wall among participants in traffic and the automobile traffic accident mechanism, which can serve as an auxiliary indicator in the early identification of injured persons with thoracic aorta ruptures.
