Akutna stanja pri sladkorni bolezni = Emergencies in patients with diabetes mellitus

Diabetes mellitus is characterized by hyperglycemia and other metabolic darangements that are caused by inadequate action of insulin on the body tissues. According to recommendations of the ...international Expert Committee onthe Classification of diabetes Mellitus, diabetes is classified as Type 1, type 2, other types and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes affects approximately 10% of diabetic patients and is characterized by b cell destruction leading to absolute deficiency of insulin, which means that without exogenous insulin, patient is prone to development of diabetic ketoacidosis. Type 2 diabetes is characterized by insulin resistance, inadequate insulin secretion response, or both. Diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar nonketotic coma and hypogycemic coma are acute, life-threatening complication of diabetes mellitus. The prognosis of each of these complications depends on timely accurate diagnosis and treatment.
