Monica Bonvicini : as walls keep shifting
    Bonvicini, Monica
The catalogue is published on the occasion of the exhibition Monica Bonvicini I Don't Like You Very Much, which was shown at Kunsthaus Graz from 22.04.-21.08.2022. The house as a place of identity ... construction and as a place where relationships and longings emerge is a theme Monica Bonvicini has been dealing with for a long time. In video works such as Wallfuckin' (1995/96) or HausFrau Swinging (1997), she already reflected in the 1990s on the interplay of architectural and patriarchal structures, which also manifests itself in conventional notions of space. The desolate conditions of those buildings that Monica Bonvicini has depicted since the photographic works Where Air Dwells (1992) or the series of works Hurricanes and Other Catastrophes - a series of large-format black-and-white drawings created over the last 15 years - are to be read as scenarios of a ruinous present and future and speak of destruction, natural disasters and climate crisis. Thus, the instability inherent in Bonvicini's buildings, stripping them of their original, protective purpose, can be read as a visual metaphor for the uncertain circumstances that define our present and future lives. As Walls Keep Shifting is the title of a large-scale architectural sculpture that was first created for the OGR in Turin in 2019, rebuilt for the Busan Biennale in 2020 and shown - disassembled into three parts - at the Kunsthaus Graz in 2022. The project offers a contemporary questioning of the individual determination of place as the establishment of a private space, with the resulting discontents such as isolation, exclusionary dynamics, disenchantment and the rise of reactionary sentiments. At the same time, the work raises questions about what migration, what a home can be and addresses bio-architecture and architectural history.
