  • Functional anatomy of the liver
    Hribernik, Marija, 1959-
Morphologic anatomy of the liver is a classic descriptive anatomy, dealing mostly with surface liver characteristics. In functional anatomy the liver is divided into functionally independent subunits ... - two hemilivers, four sectionsor eight segments. The subunits of the same level of division are roughly of equal size. The division is based on branching of the arterial and biliary systems and on the position of three main hepatic veins. As concerningthe portal vein system, it is congruent in most cases with the arterial and biliary system in the right hemiliver, but shows different branching pattern in the left hemiliver. The left portal vein is a unique structure, having one role in prenatal and another in postnatal life. Its position in the left hemiliver is of great surgical importance.
