  • Forest fire prevention roads as an active wildfire protection measure
Kravanja, Matej ; Potočnik, Igor, 1960-
In Slovenia, forest fire risk is highest in the Kras Forest Management Region, mainly due to climate conditions, geological factors and human influence. Natural vegetation in the area has been heavily ... modified; today, the predominant forest type is young forest of increased fire risk, with pioneer vegetation resulting from amelioration efforts. Construction of forestfire prevention roads (FFPRs) as a preventive technical measure of fire protection opens up forest land, thus allowing emergency firefighting crews access to fire. Satisfactory density and alignment of fire prevention roads are key to effective intervention in case of fire. The paper presents the roleand importance of FFPRs in fire risk forest areas, identifies the suitability of the FPFR in the Kras I Forest Management Unit (FMU) with regardto the modern wildfire suppression techniques and assesses to what extent the planned FFPR network in the area corresponds with the forest land of optimum openness. It has been established that the FFPR network in the KrasI FMU opens up 53% of the total FMU's surface area, i.e. 47% of the total forest land, and is as such not suitable for the use of modern fire suppression techniques. Even with the planned network, the Kras I FMU would not be sufficiently open. The new network would open up 57% of forest land or 61% of the total FMU area. The relative openness of forest land of very high fire risk and forest land of high fire risk within the Kras I FMU is 49% and 41%, respectively. It follows that the openness of the area is sufficient to allow emergency firefighting interventions.
