Vpliv klorheksidina in fluoridov na patogeno bakterijsko floro : magistrska naloga

The aim of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory effect of a varnish containing 1% chlorhexidine (Cervitec), used in combination with a 0,9% fluoride-containing varnish (Fluorprotector), on ...Lactobacillus sp. and Streptococcus mutans. Thirty-four children attending a special school in Ljubljana took part in the study. There were 15 girls and 19 boys. All the children had been visiting their dentist regularly. Trough estimation of colony of both bacteria in saliva samples, taken at baseline, second, third and fourth examination, we wanted to find out the influence of chlorhexidine and fluoride varnish. Each child received a single varnish application just after the baseline saliva samples had been taken. The effect of the treatment was evaluated by estimating the number of colony forming units (CFU) of Lactobacillus sp. and S. mutans in specimens of saliva collected just prior tothe treatment and at intervals of 13, 15 and 17 weeks thereafter. Two commercial culture media were employedČ Dentocult SM-Strip mutans and Dentocult LB (Vivadent, Liechtenstein). Analysis of the results with t test, Wilcoxon and Kruskal-Wallisovim test, showed that S. mutans was significantly more common in saliva collected prior to the treatment than in the second set of speciments (p=0.000001)č the difference in the CFU values between the firstand the third set of speciments was somewhat smaller (p=0.04), while the difference between the first and the last set was insignificant (p=0.3123). The results for Lactobacillus sp. were more uniform, suggesting that the treatment had a much smaller effect on the organism. We believe that caries-susceptible children and children showing poor cooperation during dental treatment should receive chlorhexidine-fluoride varnish applications every three months
