Genetske osnove parodontalne bolezni = Genetic basis of periodontal disease

The discovery of the human genome in the year 2001 opened new possibilities for the diagnosis and treatment of systemic diseases, including those that affect the oral cavity. The review article deals ...with the prevalence of aggressive and chronic periodontitis in families and among monozygotic and dizygotic twins. The second part describes studies concerned with the principal genes and genetic polymorphism of proinflammatory cytokines, such asIL-1 and TNF-alpha, and polymorphism of receptors on immunoglobulins G in patients with periodontitis. The results of these studies suggest that in approximately 50% of cases, the pathogenesis of periodontitis can be ascribed to genetic factors. Future research may lead to the development of genetic tests which could be useful for early recognition of patients susceptible to periodontitis.
