    In this chapter, we provide an in-depth exploration of biomedical natural language processing (NLP) applications that are based on scientific literature (literature mining). We begin by introducing ... essential literature resources and describe NLP-based tools and resources that focus on processing the biomedical literature at large scale. Next, we delve into applications of NLP that are domain-agnostic; specifically, semantic indexing of the literature, text summarization, and literature-based discovery. In the subsequent sections, we discuss domain-specific applications of NLP, starting with biological applications, such as gene prioritization, protein function prediction, and pathway curation. This is followed by pharmacological (drug repurposing, pharmacovigilance) and clinical applications (guideline development, clinical decision support). We also briefly describe consumer-centric applications, including text simplification and automatic summarization targeting laypeople. Lastly, we explore the synergistic potential between literature mining and other data modalities. We conclude the chapter by highlighting some of the challenges facing literature mining.
