Energy conservation and indoor air quality in old school buildings

Along with energy analysis with the assistance of special computer software, possible measures for achieving energy savings in seven older school buildingsin Slovenia were studied. The estimated ...energy savings potential was 40% and in some cases, with higher costs, even more. The main aim was to achieve the greatest energy savings while assuring satisfactory indoor air quality at as low as possible costs and acceptable pay-back time. The analysisof indoor air quality in rooms was performed by using the corresponding apparatus and by questioning students (20% of them). Both methods zielded the same results - poor indoor air quality, as up to 60% of students complained about indoor air quality. The indoor air was stuffy and there was no feeling of freshness in spite of the fact that the ventilation losses of the rooms were sizable.
