Female art and agency in Yugoslavia, 1971-2001
    Foerschner, Anja
Despite having become marginalized on the map of contemporary art since the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s, Belgrade continues to be a hub of creative activity. Especially noteworthy is the strong ... presence of women artists, scholars, and activists whose deeply personal, yet highly political is rooted in the city’s strong legacy of female and feminist artists and agents, which, in the canon of Western-dominated art history, remain under-acknowledged. Female Art and Agency in Yugoslavia, 1971-2001offers the first comprehensive study of female and feminist artists and agents―women who formed the art and cultural scene in other ways such as scholarship, theory, exhibition work―in former Yugoslavia since the 1970s. Using the foundation of the influential Student Cultural Center (SKC) in 1971 as its starting point, the book examines female art and agency in Belgrade and its confluence with feminist theory in the 70s before tracing its development through the increasingly nationalistic political climate of the 1980s, the Balkan wars of the 1990s, and the changing political landscape since then.
