  • Gender-biased language in EFL teaching material? [Elektronski vir]
    Križan, Agata
Since children spend a lot of time in schools, which has profound effects on learners' lives and their attitudes to the world, it is very important to know what it is we are teaching our children to ... think and feel about themselves and about each other as females and males, and in what ideological and linguistic context gender is presented in the teaching material, including language teaching material. The focus of this paper was to find out how women and men are presented in the visual and oral material of coursebook New Success at First Certificate (1997) by Robert O' Neill, Michael Duckworth and Kathy Gude, which was used as a part of teaching material in the studying programme for early foreign language teaching, and whether any linguistic differences and gender bias occur. As an analytical framework, Poynton's (1989) fairly comprehensive list of what is currently known about the differences in speaking between women and men is used. This paper also attempted to show that such and similar analyses can, as indicators of possible gender bias, be highly useful for EFL/ESP teachers when choosing teaching material.
