Monitoring of corrosion of steel and stainless steel reinforcement in concrete = Monitoring korozije armature od nelegiranog i nehrđajućeg čelika u betonu

Corrosion of steel in concrete can be affected by two processes: carbonation and contamination of chloride ions. Carbonation increases mechanical strength of concrete and decreases its alkalinity. ...The passive layer on steel dissolvesat pHs bellow 10 and corrosion of steel initiates. On the other hand,chloride contamination induces the self-catalytic reaction leading to voluminous ferrous (hydro)oxides growth, which causes spalling and delamination of surrounding concrete at the surface of steel. In the lecture, basic electrochemical approach will be presented by referring to engineering expectations from civil engineering experts. Mechanisms, electrochemical techniques and other monitoring techniques will be presented and evaluated on the basis of our few decade experience of the work in the field of corrosion in concrete at Slovenian Building and Civil Engineering Institute.
