Ultrazvočna ocena plevralnega prostora pri zdravih osebah : disertacijaKocijančič, Ksenija, 1968-Introduction: Our preliminary research study on ultrasonographic detection of physiological pleural fluid is the only report to be found in the literature covering this basic field of medicine. The ... objective of the extended study wasto confirm that normal pleural fluid could be shown with ultrasonography and to assess the frequency of this finding among healthy adults and children. We would like to search for possible individual variations of the amounts of pleural fluid over time in healthy adults and children. Especially children represent the population, which is quite often examined by ultrasound. We would like to establish the ultrasonographic boundaries betweenphysiological pleural fluid and small pleural effusion for every day clinical practice. Participants and methods: During preliminary study, chest sonography of both pleural spaces was performed twice in more than 100 healthyvolunteers. In extended study, we repeated the examination of both pleural spaces in 86 of them. We included a group of another 71 healthy adults, which underwent three consecutive ultrasonographic examinations of both pleural spaces within a few monthsć time. Altogether, we included 157 volunteers, which were examined three times. Chest ultrasonography of pleural space was performed in leaning on the elbow position, after five minutes leaning in lateral decubitus position. The presence of the anechoic compartment (layer, zone) of at least 2 mm in thickness between parietal and visceral pleura was defined to represent a positive result. The ultrasonography was repeated twice on each subject after one to two months. Inaddition, 100 healthy children were examined ultrasonographically using the same procedure. Sonographic follow-up procedure was done one or two months after the baseline examination.
