A translator's checklist

The author considers the question of what is involved in producing a good translation. His answer is based on a detailed examination of four short Slovene texts and their English translations. The ...article explores issues such as: the clarity of the original text; ensuring the accuracy of the translation; using an appropriate style and register; the cultural appropriateness of the text content; and a range of lexical and grammatical problems. In discussing these matters, the author emphasises the need for the translator to achieve a sufficient distance between the original and the translated text, in particular through revision. The author concludes his discussion with a twelve-question checklist, which the translator can use as part of the translation and revision process. He also provides a revised translation of each of the four texts under discussion.
