Povezanost med športno dejavnostjo dijakov Dijaškega doma Ivana Cankarja v Ljubljani in njihovim uživanjem drog = The Relationship between Sports Activity and Drug Consumption with the Pupils in the "Ivan Cankar" Boarding School in Ljubljana

Mental patients represent a fairly large percentage of the population, yet their capacities and this investigation aimed to find out how widespread the consumption of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs ...is among the pupils in the boarding school Ivan Cankar with regard to gender and their sports activity. A questionnaire (15 questions) was answered by 220 pupils, the data were processed with SPSS statistical programme, frequences and contingent tables were calculated. It was found that 56.8% of the pupils are regular smokers, 77.3% consumed alcohol over the past month, 61.8% admitted being intoxicated at least once in the same period. Every second pupil has already tried marihuana, in the past month this was used by almost one fifth of the pupils. The number of smokers is lower among sport participants, boys drink more alcohol than girls, who are also less physically active. Besides, those pupils who participated in sports activities in elementary school, as a rule continue to participate in secondary school. The results also confirm that sports activity excludes smoking which cannot be said for alcohol and marihuana consumption. In spite of that we are of opinion that sport participation reduces the abuse of drugs, therefore more attention should be paid to sports activity programs in boarding schools.
