Position-related differences in some morphological body characteristics of handball playersŠibila, Marko ...Due to the fact that in team handball the advantages of players with suitable morphological structure are evident, we have tried to establish the main morphological characteristics of the first ... Slovenian handball division players. Morphological characteristics in various subgroups of players (goalkeepers, wings, back players and pivots) were also determined so as to establish whether they had distinct profiles. The subjects were 135 handball players from eleven Slovenian first division teams (average height (mean [plus minus] s) = 185.7 4.20 cm, average body mass (mean [plus minus] s) = 86.9 9.70 kg, average age (mean [plus minus] s) = 24.5 4.2 years). The sample of subjects consisted of players playing in different positions. Standardised anthropometric protocol was used to assess subjects' morphological characteristics. The measurements included 26 different anthropometric measures. Data was processed with the SPSS computer program. First, basic statistical characteristics of anthropometric measures were obtained for all subjects together and then for each group separately. Somatotypes were determined by Heath-Carter's method. Endomorphic, mesomorphic and ectomorphic components were calculated with computer on the basis of formulas. In order to determine differences in the body composition and anthropometric data of the subjects playing in different positions, one-way analysis of variance was used. We have found many interesting differences among all subgroups. Goalkeepers are significantly taller than left and right wings; they are also significantly heavier than LW and have a high amount of body fat. P and RB players are the only players who do not differ significantly from G in the endomorphic component of somatotype. G's mesomorphic component values are lower than those of LB, CB, RW and P, but their ectomorphic component values are higher than those of LB, RB and P. LB players are the tallest of all subgroups - significantly different from CB, LW, RW and P. They are also heavier than G, CB, LW and RW, but they have less body fat than G and P. Besides, their endomorphic component values are lower than those of the players in the mentioned two positions. CB players are significantly taller and heavier only in comparison with LW and RW. They have the least body fat of all subgroups and the lowest endomorphic component value. RB have very similar morphologic characteristics to LB. Both wings (LW and RW) are very close in all morphological characteristics as well. They are significantly shorter and lighter than other players, they have less body fat and lower endomorphic component values than G and P. One of the most interesting subgroups from the morphological point of view is the group of pivots. They are significantly shorter than LB and RB, but higher than LW and RW. They are the heaviest of all players and have the largest amount of body fat. From this point of view they differ significantly from other groups also in the endomorphic (with the exception of G) and ectomorphic components (lower values).Source: Studia Kinanthropologica. - ISSN 1213-2101 (Vol. 6, no. 1, 2005, str. 17-25)Type of material - article, component part ; adult, seriousPublish date - 2005Language - englishCOBISS.SI-ID - 2657713
