Installation of optical fibre temperature sensors, analysis and modelling of temperatures in a rectifier transformer [Elektronski vir]Gradnik, TimotejThis paper presents and example of the installation and use of optical fibre temperature sensors inside a rectifier transformer for a transformer ageing study. The sensors were installed in a ... refurbished rectifier transformer operating in parallel with three other transformers og the same construction type. The purpose of the study was to acquire the thermal characteristics of the rectifier transformers in order to estimate the remaining lifetimes and optimise the cooling systems of the three older rectifier transformers using thermal and physical-chemical diagnostic methods. To obtain the thermal information on the transformers, a measurement process was developed including acquisition, peocessing and analysis of the temperature data measured with optical fibre temperature sensors. The paper analysis oil temperature nonhomogeneity in the transformers. All four transformers studied use an oil-forced (OFAF) cooling system. Our past diagnostic experience that OFAF cooling is often associated with inaccurate cooling control and faster thermalageing of paper insulation. Oil temperatures at different locations were measured with the optic fibre temperature sensors.Characteristic mixing of hot and cold oil in the top of the transformer tank (the ʺOFAF effectʺ), a possible cause of premature ageing in transformers, was observed and is analysed in the paper. Winding hot-spot temperature in the refurbished transformer, measured with optic fibre temperature sensors, was used to determine a thermal model for the refurbished transformer as well as for the other three rectifier transformers.
