  • Possibilities of replacing structural steels by bainite nodular-graphite cast iron
    Grum, Janez, 1946-
Bainite nodular cast iron has been used for forty years now but it was only in the last decade that its use has become a wide spread trend, especially to replace structural steels. Today it is ... believed that bainite nodular cast iron has extremely good mechanical properties and also high wear resistance as a result of a very hard and high-strength basic microstructure. Experiments to test the wear resistance of bainite nodular cast iron were performed on an Amsler machine for wear resistance analysis. The wear resistance was tested in a bainite cast/heat-treatable state or treated and surface-hardened state. The wear resistance tests included examination of friction coefficient, mass changes, roughness and hardness of the surface layer. On the basis of the data gathered on the bainite nodular cast iron we can conclude that it is also annealing which can ensure the required quality of the cast iron giving extremely good results in wear resistance.
