  • Scyphozoan survival strategies with emphasis on starvation resistance in ephyrae [oral presentation]
    Kogovšek, Tjaša, 1978- ...
Most of Scyphozoan species have a metagenetic life cycle. Under favorable environmental conditions, this reproductive strategy may result in high medusae population density in a relatively short ... time. The magnitude of medusa bloom is defined by the size of benthic population and the survival of early pelagic stage. However, very little is known about the latter. We examined starvation resistance and recovery capability of newly released Chrysaora pacifica ephyrae which were kept starved in filtered (0.2 %m) seawater at 3 different temperatures. Ephyrae survived remarkably prolonged starvation period with median longevity at 153, >287 and 243 days at 15, 12 and 9°C, respectively. In recovery experiments at 15°C, all ephyrae that had been exposed to various periods of starvation (24, 53, 67, 83, 140 and 160 days) recovered completely after being fed with newly hatched Artemia nauplii along with the addition of gelatinous food. Such remarkable ability shown by ephyrae to survive prolonged periods of low nourishment periods indicates that predation might be a more important factor regulating the size of C. pacifica medusae populations than food supply.
