Writing effective abstracts for international readersMrak Kosel, BernardaǂAn ǂeffective abstract should enable readers to identify the basic content of a document quickly and accurately, and thus to decide on its relevance to their particular interest. Abstracts of ... published documents should usually be written in a highly standardized form suitable for use by information services. The paper offers some guidelines, illustrated by examples, to assist the writer in the preparation of this highly standardized text. The discussion focuses on the following aspects: basic rhetoric structure; lexis as a function of economy of words; active voice preference; avoidance of the first person; use of tenses; readability; and informativity. Finally, text examples of a descriptive and informative type of abstract are shown, and their advantages discussed.Source: Language policy and language education in emerging nations : focus on Slovenia and Croatia and with contributions from Britain, Austria, Spain, and Italy (Str. 237-245)Type of material - article, component partPublish date - 1998Language - englishCOBISS.SI-ID - 3414043
