  • Zobni dentin, pokazatelj onesnaženosti okolja s PCB-ji = Dental dentine, marker of PCB pollution
    Jan, Janja
Background: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are lipophilic, persistent and ubiquitous organochlorine environmental pollutants. In our previous study we showed that PCBs cause developmental dental ... defects in children who were exposed to PCBs in the contaminated region of Bela Krajina. The aim of this study was to examine the levels of PCBs in dentine of permanent teeth of children from areas with different PCB pollution levels. Materials and methods: Permanent teeth (n = 32) were collected from 8-14 years old children who were pre- and post-natally exposed to PCBs in a PCB-polluted area (Semič). Control teeth (n = 32) came from children from an unpolluted area (Bršljin). They had been extracted mainly for orthodontic and dental caries reasons. Enamel and cementum were removed from dentine with a diamond burr. Levels of PCBs in dentine were determined by high-resolution gas chromatography with electron capture detection. The results were statistically analysed with a Mann' Whitney U test. Results: The mean levels of PCBs in dentine of children who were exposed to PCBs and those from the control group were 38 and 7 ng/g, respectively. The difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: PCB levels in dentine from children from the PCB-polluted area were higher than from the unpolluted area. It is suggested that dental dentine could be used as a marker of PCB pollution.
